Top-Bar Hive Adventure

A local beekeeper, who owns some beautiful, handmade hives, let me tag along on an inspection day.

He had some concerns with one of the hives, so we were checking for queen cells and parasites.

What a cool experience!!  The bees are so fascinating, and the more Jason and I can watch these gals at work, the more we can be good keepers of our new hives.

I received a full spectrum of beehive knowledge in a couple of bee-filled hours.

It was also really interesting to see the less commonly seen top bar hive and see how it compared to our langstroth hive.

Top-bar hives are quite attractive and don’t require as much lifting as the more common langstroth.  They are also a standard equipment hive because the frames are all the same size – no medium, large, 8, 10 frame mixing and matching.
